Seems Like Old Times

For the next two days, Abby and Kase worked closely together in the garden at the church and her garden at home planting flowers. On the days when they started off in her own garden, Abby made them omelets for breakfast. The best time for planting was in the morning before the summer heat set in for the day. They would then move back to the nursery at the church to continue taping the edges to prepare the walls and door for painting.

They had been used to working on community projects together in high school, even though Kase still had a reputation which he simply couldn’t seem to shake. He was hoping that somehow this gained him a little bit of favor with the small community in Elmhurst, who never seemed to forgive or forget. Not that Kase had anything to be forgiven for, he was just a typical loud teenager who had big dreams.

Something was bugging Kase about what Abby had told him about her mom’s illness. Why couldn’t she tell me what she was going through with her mother’s cancer? I cannot believe she decided to hide that from me and to go it alone. This must have been so tough on her. I could have been here for her to help her. Even if that just meant being able to listen and comfort her throughout the process. Why does she always have to be so stubborn? We’ve always shared absolutely everything – why did she feel she wasn’t able to share this?

Kase’s thoughts were interrupted by a call from Sam.

“Hey Kase, please let Abby know that I cannot make it to the church today to help out, Julie is having some problems, and we’ve rushed through to the hospital. The baby’s heartbeat is irregular, and they’ve decided to admit her. Once I’m done here, I need to get back to the shop. I have a couple of urgent orders I need to get out.”

“I completely understand! I will let Abby know. Don’t worry about a thing other than helping Julie. Shout if you need any additional hands at the shop as well. I can always stop there once I’m done for the day at the church.”

Kase relayed the message from his phone call with his brother. Both Abby and Kase were concerned for Julie and the baby at this stage. She hadn’t told him how she felt about having children.

Since meeting Julie and his nephews and seeing how ecstatically happy Sam and Julie were as a family, Kase knew that it was something that he wanted. The only difference was that he knew that there’s only one person he would ever even imagine having children with. Kase suddenly had a flash of inspiration.

“Hey Abby, I’m just stepping out for a couple of minutes. I’ll be right back, though, so don’t you go anywhere.” Kase says in a teasing manner.

“Don’t worry, Kase, I know that look of yours. You’re up to something! I will wait for you right here.
